instructions for the mechanically challenged:
installing a programmable wiper relay

today, we will install a relay that will allow you to program your front wiper delay. as with my instructions with how to get rid of the 1996 drl's, and how to add a trunk light and how to add an after market stereo, these instructions are applicable for MY 1996 - if your car has fifteen of everything that i tell you to look for because your car was made on tuesday instead of friday, dont bug me. this is a FYI only. though i would be more than happy to answer any questions about unclear instructions. in vw's infinite wisdom, they have once again decided to change part numbers on what seems a bi-weekly basis. so, if you have MY CAR, then the part number you will need is 1HM-955-531-C wiper relay $25.12 at the same time, i have heard that the following may or may not work, depending on which year you have and what day of the week your car was made: 1HM-955-531-A wiper relay $?? 1HM-955-531-B wiper relay $?? 3B0-955-531 wiper relay $45.00 installing takes about five minutes once you know what's going on. so read in advance and know what is coming. i guess i must tell you all that the following is an account of MY experiences. look under the knee pad under the steering wheel. you will find the fuse box "hatch." unlike the drl removal, i was able to do all my fiddling through the hatch. if you cant find the right position, or you hands are too big, then the instructions for removing the whole bottom panel are included as well. looking through the hatch more or less, this is what you should see.. |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----------------------------------| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --some of these are filled |-----------------------------------| some are not, dont worry | | 19 | | | | | --about them | | | | | | | |-----------------------------------| | | | | | | | | | | | | | --these are the fuses |-----------------------------------| pull the 19 plug. then replace it with your new plug. done. close up the hatch and, depending if you got the correct relay for your particular car, your programmable wiper should now work. if you are having trouble getting your hands in through the small hatch or you cant get enough leverage to get the relay in or out, then these are the instructions for you. start off by removing the whole bottom panel. after you remove the two screws pull it down slightly and then pull it out. the back is held in place by being sandwiched in a clip. no big deal, really. then pull the 19 plug and replace it with your new relay. done. then slide the far end of the bottom panel into the far sandwich. then screw in the two screws to attach the front. done. to set the interval: pull the stock down (what you used to do to use your intermittent mode) and then push it back up to the off position. wait the desired about of time and then pull the stock back down. you have just programmed your wipers. if you screwed up, or want to redo the delay, just return the stock to the off position and repeat the above instructions. easy. be well, go well.. addendum: from theodore@voicenet.com andrew sent me the following. he has a 97 drivers edition, and i guess that they renumbered the wiper relay. it is in the same spot, just different number: 196. |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----------------------------------| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --some of these are filled |-----------------------------------| some are not, dont worry | | 196 | | | | | --about them | | | | | | | |-----------------------------------| | | | | | | | | | | | | | --these are the fuses |-----------------------------------|
